Diocese of Fresno June Update

The Official Committee of Survivors continues to be actively involved in all aspects of the Diocese of Fresno bankruptcy case. We are providing this update to keep Survivors informed about what has happened in the case and what comes next.

  1. Mediation Scheduled for the End of June

The Court has directed the parties to participate in formal mediation at the end of June. Representatives of the Official Committee, the Diocese, the insurance companies, and their professionals will take part. Mediation is a confidential process in which the parties work with a neutral mediator to try to resolve disputes and move the case toward a settlement. Because mediation is confidential, we may not be able to share details about what happens during those discussions unless all parties agree that the information can be made public.

  1. Committee Reviewing Financial Information

The Court approved the Official Committee’s request to obtain documents and information about the Diocese’s and the Christian Brothers’ pension programs. Pulling information like this together is part of the bankruptcy process. The Committee has a responsibility to understand the Diocese’s financial situation as completely as possible, including its assets, obligations, and insurance coverage. Gathering and reviewing this information helps the Committee advocate for Survivors and make informed decisions as the case moves forward.

  1. Court Approved Sale of a Home

The Diocese asked the Court for permission to sell a single-family home. Before taking a position on the request, the Official Committee and its real estate professionals reviewed the proposed sale, including the sale price, the marketing process, and any restrictions that could affect the property’s value. Based on that review, the Committee did not object, and the Court approved the sale. The money from the sale will be held in a separated account, so it remains available to become part of the bankruptcy settlement.
